In Holyhead Harbour on morning of 23 May 2017 I saw at a distance a black diving duck with seemingly extensive white markings on its flanks and lower back. I thought it could be a Velvet Scoter but this seems to have white on wings, not body. When the bird dived there was a definite showing of red legs/feet.

Did anyone see the bird or have any suggestions as to id?

It sounds EXACTLY like a Black Guillemot, George. They are nesting in the harbour walls offshore there.

Thanks Eddie.

It's a bird I have never seen before and, on reflection, its shape was more Auk-like than Duck-like. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

George
