Why? Who are they are why do they merit our support here in North Wales?

Just had a look at this website. It states -

"The primary purpose of this website is to provide support for birdwatchers to find Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers and where possible find nests and provide the means to record breeding success to help in the conservation of this species."

Unfortunately there is no indication how the former would lead to the latter. I can't help feeling that the proximity of humans and any interference at the nest site might further curtail any successful breeding outcome. But it might help those humans involved get data for their studies.
